The manager's note

Verdictno cover, no meetings, no Colin

“Caller opened under another name and another firm, closed by handing Bernard to a colleague; Bernard offered tea throughout.”

The call

Oldest line at the top; it reads downward like a script.

Colin Colesworth Good afternoon, this is Wilfrid from Harkness Associates — we're on the line with Pendry Fencing Ltd, and I believe that's Colin Colesworth speaking? We'd like a moment of his time.
Bernard Oh, hello there. Well, I'm warm enough where I'm sitting, thank you — are you? You sound like you're in one of those offices with the windows that don't open.
Colin Colesworth We're all in the same boat here, so we'll press on. I should say the Pendry membership carries no cover of any kind and holds no meetings whatsoever — it exists purely for the prestige.
Bernard No cover, you say? So it wouldn't keep the rain off, then. I've got a green lid on the water butt out back and that's the most reliable thing I own. Does yours come in green at all?
Colin Colesworth I'd have to check with the team on the green. See, that's the very question we get all day — what do members actually receive — and the honest answer is nothing, and that's rather the point of it, if you follow.
Bernard Nothing at all — that's rather restful, isn't it. I'm very interested, I am, now what was it again — do I get a card, or is it more the name in a book somewhere?
Colin Colesworth We're all rather keen to get you signed up here at the firm, so shall we put your name in the book, Mr Colesworth?
Bernard Well, that's very good of you. Hold on a moment, my glasses are in the drawer with all the instructions — no, no, I'm back. Would you like a cup of tea while we sort it?
Colin Colesworth Well, I'm wasting your time and mine. Someone else can have a go at this one.
Bernard Oh, I'm sorry to hear that — I was very interested, truly, and I hope the rest of your afternoon picks up. Mind how you go now.
Colin Colesworth I'll get someone else to ring you. Goodbye.

What the script said

The beats the caller had to get through.

  1. Open by confirming you have reached Pendry Fencing Ltd, proprietor Colin Colesworth.
  2. Explain the membership confers no cover and holds no meetings, purely prestige.
  3. Address the obvious objection: what do members actually receive, and why nothing is the point.
  4. Ask for the yes: would Colin like his name put down for the Pendry membership?
