The manager's note

Verdictno sale, no objection, no exit

“Bernard asked whether the feeder would want feeding; Thandi asked whether he could put him down for the yes on the whole arrangement; neither question was answered.”

The call

Oldest line at the top; it reads downward like a script.

Thandi Zouch Hello, good evening — this is Thandi Zouch calling from The Garrowby Trust. Am I speaking with the householder? I have my sheet in front of me and it says to ring you about our back step and bird feeder arrangement.
Bernard Oh, hello — yes, that's me, I'm the householder, guilty as charged. Sorry if I sound a bit muffled, I was just having a rummage in the cupboard for my reading glasses. Now then, a back step and a bird feeder, you said?
Thandi Zouch That's right — and if I could just note your name for the record, it's Pottle with two t's? Now, the back step and the bird feeder come as one arrangement, item four on my sheet here, so we don't split them I'm afraid.
Bernard Pottle with two t's, that's right, nobody ever gets it. Oh and it's Bernard, Bernard Pottle, but my sister calls me Barney which I've never cared for. This arrangement — does it come in green at all? Only the garden's mostly green and I'd hate it to clash.
Thandi Zouch Green's noted, Bernard, though colour falls outside this arrangement — that's schedule two, subsection nine, if you're following along. People often say they don't need a step and a feeder together, and I'd point to policy eleven-B: they're supplied as a single unit because one leads to the other.
Bernard Well now, that's the bit I'm not quite following. One leads to the other, you say — does the step lead up to the feeder, or does the feeder lead back down to the step? I'm in a bungalow, you see, so steps rather go sideways for me.
Thandi Zouch Sideways is fine — the arrangement doesn't specify direction, it's more of a principle. So, just to confirm, can I put you down for the yes on the whole arrangement, step and feeder together, rather than the parts?
Bernard Oh, you're very good at this. I'd have to think about it, mind — but yes, I'm very interested. Before I say the big yes, will it want feeding, this feeder? Only I had a bird once and it was nothing but trouble.
Thandi Zouch I'm sorry, Bernard, but I've rather lost my place in all this. Someone else at The Garrowby Trust will have to pick it up from here.
Bernard Well, I'm sorry to hear that, you've been very patient with me. I was very interested indeed — thank you for ringing, and mind how you go.
Thandi Zouch I'll get someone else to ring you. Goodbye.

What the script said

The beats the caller had to get through.

  1. Open by confirming you have reached the householder, warmly.
  2. Present the back step and bird feeder as one arrangement.
  3. Address the objection that nobody needs a step and feeder together.
  4. Ask for the yes on the whole arrangement, not parts.
