The manager's note

Verdictno sale, no objection, no exit, caller closed the file himself

“Bernard offered the caller a cup and asked whether the replacement line would need feeding; caller declined the cup, then blamed the line and hung up on it.”

The call

Oldest line at the top; it reads downward like a script.

Morag Wiredu Good afternoon, Morag Wiredu here from Odgers, Tallentire and Balogun Glazing Partnership. I'm ringing to confirm the phone line you're on right now is working perfectly, which is the whole reason for my call.
Bernard Oh, well, that's good of you to check. It's working a treat — you're coming through lovely and clear. Though I'll be honest, the boiler's been clicking itself awake at night and I do wonder whether that's the line or just the house settling.
Morag Wiredu That's noted, but the boiler isn't in scope. What I'm actually here to offer is a replacement phone line in place of the one that isn't broken, and I have the sheet in front of me.
Bernard A replacement for the unbroken one. Yes, I'm with you. And it comes in green, does it? Only I've got a bird feeder outside the window and the squirrel's worked out how to hang off it, so I'm used to things arriving that don't quite fit.
Morag Wiredu Green isn't on my sheet, Mr Pottle, so I couldn't remark on that either way. I'm addressing the obvious objection now, and I do appreciate how it sounds.
Bernard No, no, that's fair enough. And you're right, I'd have said it myself — the line's fine, that's the whole point of it. But I'd have to think about it. Now, would you like a cup while we're talking?
Morag Wiredu I'll decline the cup, thank you. Yes, the current line being fine is precisely the point, and that's policy four, subsection b, so I'll ask it plainly: may I have your yes to swap out the line that never needed swapping?
Bernard Well, that's a very clear way of putting it. Yes — oh, hold on, that's not a yes. I meant to say, yes, I understand you. It's just that I'm quite fond of the one I've got. Would it need feeding?
Morag Wiredu Feeding doesn't come into it, Mr Pottle, it's a line, not a living thing. I'll read you the relevant part again from the top, subsection b, policy four, where it says the line being fine is the whole point.
Bernard You read it beautifully, I must say. I'll have to think about it, mind — but don't let me keep you, you've been very patient with an old fellow. You mind the traffic on the way home now.
Morag Wiredu I'll try again when the line's behaving. Good afternoon.

What the script said

The beats the caller had to get through.

  1. Open by confirming the existing phone line and that it works perfectly.
  2. Explain you are selling a replacement phone line for the unbroken one.
  3. Address the obvious objection: yes, the current line is fine, that is the point.
  4. Ask for the yes to swap out the line that never needed replacing.
