“Caller offered cover for a gate that was never there; Bernard asked whether the inspector would knock.”

The call

Oldest line at the top; it reads downward like a script.

Barry Rangi Good afternoon, Barry Rangi here from The Mossbarrow Trust, and I'm ringing because I want to talk about the side gate on your property. Do you have one?
Bernard You're very clear, I'll say that for you. Side gate, yes — well, there's a gate at the side, it sticks something awful when it's wet. Is that the one you mean, or have I got the wrong side?
Barry Rangi That's the one, Bernard, that's exactly the one. Now the annual inspection covers gates you've never actually used, so it doesn't matter that it sticks.
Bernard Oh, that's a weight off my mind, because I've certainly never used it. Never once. So what happens on the inspection — do they knock, or do they just look at it?
Barry Rangi I'll be quick, Bernard, because here's the great news. Gates that are missing entirely, or that were never there in the first place, are fully covered, so you're safe either way.
Bernard Missing entirely, you say. Well, now, that's very thorough. Would that be the same for a gate that a fellow took away and never brought back? Only I'm not sure now which gate we're on about.
Barry Rangi Same thing, Bernard, it's covered. So let's get this year's inspection booked in, shall we?
Bernard Well, I'd have to think about it. Would I need to be in? Only I sometimes go and sit in the spare room of an afternoon, and I'd hate to miss them.
Barry Rangi Bernard, people on this floor would kill for my booking rate, so let me just get this confirmed for you. What I'd say to that is —
Bernard Oh, I'm sure they would, you sound very good at it. Was that a booking rate or a brooking rate? Only I've got a brother-in-law who's always on about rates.
Barry Rangi Hello? I'm losing you. Hello?

What the script said

The beats the caller had to get through.

  1. Open by asking whether they have a side gate on their property.
  2. Explain the annual inspection covers gates they have not used.
  3. Reassure that missing or absent gates are fully covered.
  4. Ask if they would like to book this year's inspection.
