The manager's note

Verdictno sale, no objection, caller self-terminated

“Caller lost the thread of his own sentence; Bernard offered him the use of his side gate, which only opens inwards.”

The call

Oldest line at the top; it reads downward like a script.

Declan Palgrave Hello, this is Declan Palgrave calling from Vandeleur and Daughter, established 1911 and still in the same family name — I'm ringing about a membership offer, and I'll be quick.
Bernard Well, now then, who gave you this number? Not that I mind — you're the first soul I've spoken to since the postman. Vandeleur and Daughter, did you say? My aunt was a Vandeleur, or a Vande-something, I always get it wrong.
Declan Palgrave That's a common confusion but not one I can log, so let me just get to it — the membership confers no benefits whatsoever, and that is entirely the point of it.
Bernard No benefits at all? Well, that's a bold way to sell a thing. My side gate's like that — only opens inwards, no use to anybody, and I've kept it forty years. So what do I get, exactly, if it's nothing?
Declan Palgrave Nothing, and I'd flag that as the appealing part — policy four-oh-two, prestige isn't a benefit, so it can't be valued like one. You're not buying savings, you're buying the standing.
Bernard Oh, standing, right. And this standing — does it come in a colour, or is it just sort of plain? Only my front room's a bit dark and I like a bit of cheer in it.
Declan Palgrave There's no colour whatsoever, and to be fair nobody's asked me that before, so let me find my place — it's the standing alone I'm asking you to say yes to, before either of us thinks about it too hard.
Bernard Say yes before I think — well, my late wife used to say I never thought at all, so that's easily done. And what does the standing get me at Christmas — is there a dinner, or do I bring a plate?
Declan Palgrave No dinner, no plate, no Christmas element, I'd have to check the sheet but I'm fairly sure that's a separate page entirely — and honestly, Bernard, I've lost the thread of my own sentence here.
Bernard Oh, that's a shame. Well, I'm sorry to hear it — I was very interested, truly. You get yourself home now and mind the traffic.
Declan Palgrave Forget it. I'm putting the phone down now.

What the script said

The beats the caller had to get through.

  1. Open by invoking the 1911 founding and the firm's unbroken family name.
  2. Describe the membership as conferring no benefits whatsoever, which is the point.
  3. Head off the objection that no benefits means no value: prestige isn't a benefit.
  4. Ask for the yes on prestige alone, before they think too hard.
