The call

Oldest line at the top; it reads downward like a script.

Gwen Thackeray Good evening, this is Gwen Thackeray from Barrowmere Quay Household Certifications — and yes, I know it's late, I'll be quick. It's about your staircase.
Bernard Oh, a certification! Well, that's very good of you, I don't think anyone's ever certified my staircase. It's a perfectly nice staircase, mind. Bit creaky on the third step. Is this about the moths, or the creeks?
Gwen Thackeray Oh, the moths — definitely the moths, not the creaks. So, just to confirm, do your stairs currently host any moths at all?
Bernard Host? Well, I couldn't say. Mavis is the one who'd notice — she's my parrot, she keeps an eye on things. She sits at the top and watches. Would she count as hosting them, do you think, or is there a difference?
Gwen Thackeray No, no, a parrot isn't a moth, don't worry — but that's actually relevant. Moths prefer the upper steps and the landing, exactly where Mavis sits, so she'd be the first to notice.
Bernard Oh, the landing! That's where I keep the good chair. So they'd be up there with Mavis of an evening, having a look round. Do moths and parrots get along generally, or would I need to introduce them carefully?
Gwen Thackeray I honestly couldn't say about the introductions — that's not really my area. What I can do is offer twelve monthly inspections of your staircase only, so let me tell you about that.
Bernard Twelve! One a month, that's very thorough. Would that be the same inspector each time, or a different one? Only I like to know who's coming, so I can put the kettle on and have the biscuits out.
Gwen Thackeray That's a lovely thought — I'd imagine the same inspector, though I'd have to check. Now, one thing worth knowing is that the subscription excludes all other rooms; it's the staircase and nothing else.
Bernard The staircase and nothing else, right you are. So the hall's out, and the kitchen. What about the little bit at the bottom, where the stairs start? Is that staircase, or is that hall? It's a grey area, that.
Gwen Thackeray It is a grey area, and I don't want to guess at it. Look, I've explained the whole thing now, so can I just get a yes from you before we go any further?
Bernard Well — yes, I'm very interested, I really am. Now, what was the firm called again? Barrow-something. I want to write it on the pad by the phone, only my glasses have gone wandering.
