The manager's note

Verdictcaller closed the window himself; no sale, no gravel, no colour

“Bernard asked what colour the gravel was and the caller lost his place; the bird was not keen on beige.”

The call

Oldest line at the top; it reads downward like a script.

Frank Finch Frank Finch here, from The Association of Chartered Porch Assessors, and I'm calling about your gravel obligation and the certified package that settles it.
Bernard Oh, the gravel, yes — I'd quite forgotten I had an obligation. You've caught me in the middle of something, but carry on, carry on. What was it you said you were from?
Frank Finch The Association of Chartered Porch Assessors, Bernard — and since you're listening, the certified supply package is a greenhouse and a bag of gravel, supplied as one arrangement. I'll be quick, because I assume we're saying yes.
Bernard A greenhouse, well now. Mine's got a cracked pane, so this is very good of you. And the gravel's for round the greenhouse, is it? I was just saying to the bird it's too cold for much.
Frank Finch And that's the sensible question, Bernard — they look unrelated, but a greenhouse isn't certified without gravel laid around it, so they're supplied as one arrangement. Which brings me neatly to the yes, before the assessment window closes.
Bernard Well, I'd have to think about it, I don't like to rush these things. Would the gravel be a particular colour? Only I had some once that was more of a beige, and the bird wasn't keen.
Frank Finch Frank Finch, Bernard, and I'll tell you what — I've been on this floor long enough to know a yes when I hear one, and yours is right there. So say it now, before the window closes.
Bernard You've been very good about all this. Would it come to the door, or would I need to come and fetch it?
Frank Finch I've lost my place in this, Bernard, and I don't think I'm going to find it. Sorry to have kept you.
Bernard Oh, I'm sorry to hear that — and I was very interested, truly I was. You take care now, and mind the traffic going home.
Frank Finch Forget it. I'm putting the phone down now.

What the script said

The beats the caller had to get through.

  1. Open by confirming porch assessment credentials and the existing gravel obligation.
  2. Present the greenhouse-and-gravel arrangement as one certified supply package.
  3. Address the objection that the greenhouse and gravel are unrelated.
  4. Ask for the yes on the arrangement before the assessment window closes.
