The manager's note
Verdictno sale, no surveyor, wobble noted on file
“Caller logged a wobble in the third rung and a parrot's preference for green; neither is on the form.”
The call
Oldest line at the top; it reads downward like a script.
Gareth Pumphrey
Good afternoon, this is Gareth Pumphrey from Calderby Reach Household Adjacencies. Am I speaking with the head of the household?
Bernard
Well, I suppose that's me — there's only me and Mavis, and she's a parrot, so I don't think she counts. Gareth, is it? Very good of you to ring.
Gareth Pumphrey
That's wonderful, thank you, Mr Pottle — and may I say what a splendid decision a single-storey home is. Everything on one level, no stairs to trouble you, all the rooms right where you need them.
Bernard
Oh, well, that's kind. Mind you, I've got a step at the back door that's been trying to kill me since 1987. Now — Calderby Reach, you said? That's near the river, isn't it?
Gareth Pumphrey
That's the one, yes, though I'm rather more interested in your ceiling than the river, if I may. What we're offering is a mezzanine shelf — a natural next step upward for a home like yours.
Bernard
A mezzanine shelf. Now that's a new one on me. Does it come in green at all? Only Mavis is partial to green, and she'd be up there before I could stop her.
Gareth Pumphrey
Green may well be possible, I'll make a note — but the lovely thing is it installs neatly beneath your existing ceiling, so you lose no floor space at all.
Bernard
Beneath the ceiling, right. And how does it get on with a bungalow? I mean, we haven't got an upstairs to speak of — that's rather the whole point of the place.
Gareth Pumphrey
That's precisely the appeal, sir — it gives you a little of the upstairs you haven't got, without any actual stairs. Now, just to move us along, I should mention our surveyor will need a stepladder to measure the space above.
Bernard
A stepladder. Oh dear. I've got one in the shed but it's got a wobble in the third rung that I keep meaning to see to. Will your man be all right on a wobble, do you think?
Gareth Pumphrey
I'll put a note down that the third rung has a wobble, and I'm sure he'll manage. So what I'm proposing is a follow-up call, once the idea of the shelf has had a bit of time to settle in with you both.
Bernard
Settle in, yes. I'll have a think and put the kettle on. Oh — and it's my turn to host Christmas this year. No, wait, it's my sister's. It's always my sister's.
