The manager's note

Verdictno sale, no objection, no decision, no signal

“Bernard offered the caller a cup of something and a bird took against the radio; the caller reported losing a line that was holding up fine.”

The call

Oldest line at the top; it reads downward like a script.

Declan Chaudhry Hello, sorry to bother you, Declan Chaudhry here from The Bramblehyde Trust, about a fence panel with your name on it — just a moment of your time, if that's all right?
Bernard Well, now then. Who gave you this number? Not that I mind — I was just standing here looking at the ironing board behind the door, wondering if it counts as furniture or a lodger.
Declan Chaudhry That's fair, that's a fair question, sorry. The trust has actually upgraded a panel on your property already — one you didn't know you had, which I realise sounds odd out loud.
Bernard Upgraded, you say. Well, I'd have to think about it — but does it come in green? Only the fence at the back is green and I'd not want it showing off.
Declan Chaudhry No, and I'm sorry, I should've got to this bit — nothing's needed from you at all. The work's already finished, no payment, no fuss, so there's really nothing to decide.
Bernard Oh, that's very good of you. Nothing to decide at all. Now, would you like a cup of something while we're on? I'm making one anyway.
Declan Chaudhry That's really kind, thank you, though I'm not sure a cup travels well down a phone. I just need one thing — could you confirm the panel upgrade is acceptable to you, just so it's on record?
Bernard On record, is it. Well, I don't like to be difficult. Remind me of your name again — there's a Declan at the bowling club, but I don't suppose that's you.
Declan Chaudhry So if I could just take the first line of the address, and the, hello? Hello, are you still there?
Bernard Sorry, sorry, I had to put the phone down a moment. There's a bird in the front room and it's taken against the radio.
Declan Chaudhry Hello? I'm losing you. Hello?

What the script said

The beats the caller had to get through.

  1. Introduce yourself as calling from the Bramblehyde Trust about their fence panel.
  2. Explain the trust has upgraded a fence panel they already unknowingly own.
  3. Reassure them no work or payment is needed, it is already done.
  4. Ask them to confirm the upgrade is acceptable and on record.
