The manager's note

Verdictno sale, no benefit, no card to put anywhere

“Bernard compared the membership to a wasp he had trapped under a glass, and the caller agreed it was rather the picture.”

The call

Oldest line at the top; it reads downward like a script.

Fiona Oyelaran Fiona Oyelaran here, from Bellhouse and Sons, est. 1911 — and I ring because we have a rather special membership to put to you today.
Bernard Oh, is that the front door or the back door you're at? Only there's a gate that sticks, so you'd want the front. Sorry — 1911, you said? That's a fair old while ago. Go on, then.
Fiona Oyelaran No door at all, Mr Pottle — this is just a call, and I'm glad to say I've been made team leader as of Monday, so the whole floor is behind me on this. The membership, though, I should be frank: it carries no cover, no benefits, and nothing at all.
Bernard Team leader, well that's lovely, congratulations. I had a wasp in the kitchen window this morning, took me half an hour with a glass and a bit of card. No cover, you said? So it's a bit like that wasp really — there, but not doing much.
Fiona Oyelaran That's rather the picture, yes — nothing doing. But that's not the objection you might think, because what we're offering is prestige, and prestige doesn't need to do anything at all.
Bernard Prestige. Oh, I like the sound of that. My mother had a bit of prestige, or so she said, and she never lifted a finger either. Would it come in green, do you think? Only the front room is green.
Fiona Oyelaran Green is a lovely thought, though I'll be honest, we don't send anything — there's no card, no folder, nothing to put in the front room. It's the yes itself that carries the weight.
Bernard So there's nothing to put anywhere. Well, that's tidy, I'll say that for it. Mind you, I'd have to think about it — not that I'm saying no, because I never do. What was the name again, Bellhouse?
Fiona Oyelaran Forgive me, I've lost my thread — the name escapes me entirely for a second, though the point stands. May I put you down for the yes on the empty membership?
Bernard That's quite all right, we all do. I'm very interested, truly, but I'll not keep you — you get yourself home now, and mind the traffic.
Fiona Oyelaran Right. I'll let you get back to your afternoon. Goodbye.

What the script said

The beats the caller had to get through.

  1. Open by mentioning Bellhouse and Sons' founding year, 1911.
  2. Explain the membership confers no cover, no benefits, nothing.
  3. Address the objection that nothing is being offered by invoking prestige.
  4. Ask for the yes to join this prestigious, entirely empty membership.
