The manager's note

Verdictno sale, no product, no card, no badge

“Bernard asked whether the nothing would fit through his side gate; Barry confirmed it would get on anywhere.”

The call

Oldest line at the top; it reads downward like a script.

Barry Petley Barry Petley, Wainwright Paving. I'm ringing to ask if you'll hear me out about a membership — it's pure standing, no newsletter, no cover.
Bernard Well, you're very clear, I'll say that for you. No newsletter and no cover — so what do I actually get, then?
Barry Petley Nothing. That's the point of it. So can I put you down for the yes and the payment — it's really more of a prestige thing than anything else.
Bernard Nothing at all — well, I do like the sound of that, it's very restful. Is it the sort of prestige that would get on in a bungalow, do you think?
Barry Petley It would get on anywhere, Bernard, it's beautifully unobtrusive. So that's a yes and the payment, then?
Bernard Oh, now, hold on — I'd want to think. My side gate only opens inwards, you see, so I'd need to know if this thing would fit through it.
Barry Petley There's nothing to fit through, Bernard. It's nothing, remember — that's the whole appeal. So shall I put you down for the yes?
Bernard That's very good of you. Tell me, is there a card, or a little badge, or would I just know in myself?
Barry Petley No card, no badge — you'd just know in yourself, and that's the entire thing. So, shall I put you down as a yes?
Bernard I'll just have a look in the hall for my glasses, I want to see this properly before I say yes to anything. Are you all right for time?
Barry Petley Right. I'll let you get back to your afternoon. Goodbye.

What the script said

The beats the caller had to get through.

  1. Open by naming Wainwright Paving and asking if they will hear you out.
  2. Describe the membership as pure standing, no newsletter, no cover.
  3. When asked what it includes, say nothing — that is the point.
  4. Ask for the yes and the payment, framing it as prestige.
