The manager's note

Verdictno sale, no objection, caller stood down

“Bernard asked whether the felt came in green for the bird; caller confirmed the bundle was two things in one thing and then hung up.”

The call

Oldest line at the top; it reads downward like a script.

Roy Cresswell Hello there, Roy Cresswell here from Wrentlow Group Holdings — we've just made me team leader on Monday, so you're in good hands. We're ringing about the boiler and felt bundle, and we'll be very quick.
Bernard Well, that's very good of you, Roy — congratulations on the Monday business. Now, a boiler I understand, but what's the felt for? Is it decorative, or does it keep something warm?
Roy Cresswell I do appreciate that, Bernard. The felt goes under the boiler housing, it's all part of the arrangement — a boiler and a roll of felt, one bundle, sorted for a house like yours.
Bernard Under the housing, I see. Would it come in green, do you think? Only I've got a bird in the front room and she's particular about what's on the floor.
Roy Cresswell The felt, Bernard, is felt — it isn't really about the bird, it's about the fitting. Which brings me to the thing people always worry about, and we can head it off now.
Bernard Oh, the fitting, right. Now what was it people worry about? I missed that bit — my ear's fine, it's just the phone.
Roy Cresswell No trouble at all, we're all behind you on this — the worry is the mess, and we handle that so there's nothing to fret over. Now, the version available today is the smaller bundle, and I'll be quick about it.
Bernard The smaller one, that sounds sensible. Mind you, the drain by the gate's been gurgling all week — do you think that's related, or just the rain?
Roy Cresswell I couldn't say on the drain, Bernard, that's not our department — but what we can do, we'll escalate it as a kindness, the whole floor's behind us on this. So, shall I put you down for the bundle today and start filling in the form?
Bernard Well, I'd have to think about it. What is it I'd be down for, exactly — the boiler or the roll of it? And do you take sugar, if you're passing?
Roy Cresswell Both, Bernard — it's a bundle, so the boiler in the, and the felt goes with the, it's all, the two of them together in the one thing. Two sugars, but that's not, we don't, I've rather lost where I was going with that.
Bernard No, that's quite all right, take your time. I've lost all sorts myself this morning — I went to the hall for something and came back with a tea towel.
Roy Cresswell Forget it. I'm putting the phone down now.

What the script said

The beats the caller had to get through.

  1. Introduce the firm and say you will be very quick
  2. Explain the arrangement and why it suits this house
  3. Deal with the objection he has not made yet
  4. Offer the version available today
  5. Ask for the yes and start filling in the form
