The manager's note

Verdictno sale, no agreement, loft hatch unavailable for comment

“Bernard asked whether prestige came in green; the caller clarified it confers nothing, and Bernard said he would have to think about it.”

The call

Oldest line at the top; it reads downward like a script.

Aoife Ottley Aoife Ottley, The Quillan Vale Trust. Quick one: do you value standing in the community?
Bernard Oh, well, now, that's a big question first thing. I'd like to think so — I'm on good terms with the milkman, though his float has the most terrible brakes, you can hear it halfway down the road. Who did you say you were with?
Aoife Ottley Right, The Quillan Vale Trust. So the membership gets you prestige and affiliation, and that's it — nothing scheduled, nothing saved.
Bernard Prestige, you say. Now, would that come in green, at all? Only the front room's got a lot of green in it already and I'd want it to match.
Aoife Ottley It's not a colour, it's a standing in the community, and look, I know how that sounds — the point is it confers nothing. That's rather the point.
Bernard Ah, standing. Well, standing's no bother at all, I do a lot of it in the garden. So nothing saved and nothing to attend — what does it actually do, then, apart from stand?
Aoife Ottley That's the whole thing, isn't it. Nothing to attend, ever — so shall I just put you down for it?
Bernard Well, I'd have to think about it. Let me just — sorry, the loft hatch keeps dropping down and I can't leave it. Hold on a moment.
Aoife Ottley I'll wait, then.
Bernard Right, I'm back, that hatch has a mind of its own. Now, you were saying — no meetings at all, ever? Not even a little one?
Aoife Ottley Right. I'll let you get back to your afternoon. Goodbye.

What the script said

The beats the caller had to get through.

  1. Open by asking whether they value standing in the community.
  2. Explain the membership: prestige, affiliation, nothing scheduled, nothing saved.
  3. Address the objection that it confers nothing—that's rather the point of prestige.
  4. Ask for the yes: enroll them now, no meetings to attend ever.
