The manager's note

Verdictno sale, no signature, no cup of tea

“Bernard offered the visitor a cup of something; the caller offered the post instead.”

The call

Oldest line at the top; it reads downward like a script.

Dawn Sithole Hello, sorry to bother you — Dawn from Bellhouse Brothers, established 1948. It's about your glasshouses.
Bernard Oh, hello there. You've caught me in the middle of something, but carry on — the milk float's just gone past and it's got terrible brakes, makes a dreadful noise. Now, Bellhouse Brothers, you said?
Dawn Sithole Sorry to interrupt — yes, that's right. So it's the twice-yearly condensation service, just a seasonal tidy-up rather than a callout, if that makes sense?
Bernard A seasonal tidy-up, right you are. And what is it exactly that's getting tidied? The glasshouses, you said — do you come out, or does it happen down the phone somehow?
Dawn Sithole No, no, we come out — it's a person who visits, sorry, I should've said. It's just the condensation, twice a year, that's the whole of it.
Bernard Well, that's very good of you. A person coming out twice a year — that's company, isn't it. Would they want a cup of something when they arrive, do you think?
Dawn Sithole That's very kind — I'll put it in the notes, though I'm not sure the notes have a box for it. And there's nothing to sign, it just renews itself to save you the fuss.
Bernard It renews itself? Well now, that's clever. My ironing board's got a mind of its own behind that door, but it's never managed to renew a thing. So nothing to sign at all — I just say yes and it carries on?
Dawn Sithole Just to confirm, are they covered for the two visits a year?
Bernard Oh, I should think so, yes. I'm very interested, I really am — let me just find something to write this on, I've got a thing somewhere.
Dawn Sithole I'll send it in the post instead. Save us both the trouble. Goodbye.

What the script said

The beats the caller had to get through.

  1. Open by invoking Bellhouse Brothers' founding year, 1948, and ask how the greenhouses are holding up.
  2. Explain the twice-yearly condensation service as a simple seasonal convenience, not a callout.
  3. Head off the objection: no contracts to sign, no fuss, it simply renews itself to save bother.
  4. Ask for the go-ahead by confirming their greenhouses are covered for the twice-yearly visits.
