The manager's note

Verdictno sale, no cover, no warm listing

“Caller lost his place on the card; Bernard offered him somewhere warm and the line went dead.”

The call

Oldest line at the top; it reads downward like a script.

Declan Quist Sorry to trouble you — Declan Quist, Marchwold Wall Coatings Group. Quick question, if I may: do you already count yourself part of the Marchwold network?
Bernard Oh, well, now, that's a good question. Are you selling, or asking? Only I like to know which bit of the conversation we're in.
Declan Quist That's fair, and honestly it's not even my best bit. It's a membership, pure prestige — there's no cover on it and no savings, that's not what it's for.
Bernard No cover and no savings, you say. Well, that's honest of you. Mind you, my boiler's got no cover either and it clicks itself awake every night, so I'm used to that sort of arrangement.
Declan Quist I know, I do know — it gives you nothing, and I'm sorry to say that plainly. But that's rather the point of it, if you see what I mean.
Bernard Well, I'd have to think about it — giving me nothing is quite a commitment. What would I do with it once I've got it?
Declan Quist Honestly? Nothing, and I'm apologising for that too. But your name would be listed somewhere — with the others — and that's really the whole offer, so would you join?
Bernard Listed somewhere, you say. I do like the sound of somewhere. Is it somewhere warm? Only I've a coat in the spare room wardrobe that's never once been listed.
Declan Quist I don't actually know if it's warm. I should know, shouldn't I. Sorry — look, I've gone and lost my place on the card here, so —
Bernard I'm sorry to hear that, I was very interested. You take care now, and mind how you go.
Declan Quist Hello? I'm losing you. Hello?

What the script said

The beats the caller had to get through.

  1. Open by asking whether they already consider themselves part of the Marchwold network.
  2. Present the membership as pure prestige, expressly with no cover and no savings.
  3. Concede it confers nothing, then suggest that is precisely the point.
  4. Ask them to join, mentioning the prestige will be listed somewhere.
