The manager's note

Verdictno sale, no objection, kettle never boiled

“Caller opened by admiring Bernard's robin, closed by declining a cup of tea; the greenhouse was never the subject.”

The call

Oldest line at the top; it reads downward like a script.

Declan Thripp Declan Thripp, The Hollinsgrove Trust. This is the greenhouse keeper, isn't it — I'll be quick, because I know a working greenhouse when I hear of one and I still think you deserve a new one.
Bernard Oh, that's very good of you. Now, a working greenhouse — is that the one down the end of my garden, or is it something that comes in a box? Only I've got a robin who's taken a liking to the chimney pot, so I like to keep an eye.
Declan Thripp The one down the end of your garden, Bernard, and I like that robin of yours — a bird with taste. Now, our scheme replaces greenhouses that are still perfectly structurally sound, which is the whole point of it.
Bernard Still sound, you say. Well, I'd have to think about that — it's been ever so good to me, that greenhouse. Does the new one come in green at all? Only the old one's a sort of green, and I'd not want it showing me up.
Declan Thripp Standard colour, Bernard, and that's the end of it. And your intact panes don't count against you one bit — a fully glazed greenhouse sails through, so there's nothing in your way.
Bernard Glazed, is it. Now then, would it need feeding? Only I've a bird in the front room I talk to, and I'd not want it getting ideas above itself. Sorry — what was the trust called again?
Declan Thripp Our scheme, Bernard. So will you authorise the swap this week?
Bernard This week, is it. Oh, I'd have to think about it — I've a phone book here with the corner folded down, and I'd rather not lose my place. Would you like a cup of tea while you wait? The kettle's only in the hall.
Declan Thripp Bernard, the truth is I've done this a very long time and you're the first one who's ever offered me a drink. So I'll let you get back to your book, and we'll say no more about it — right, that's me done.
Bernard Well, I'm sorry to hear that — I was very interested, truly I was. You take care on the way home, mind the traffic.
Declan Thripp Forget it. I'm putting the phone down now.

What the script said

The beats the caller had to get through.

  1. Open by confirming you have reached the greenhouse's registered keeper.
  2. Describe the trust's scheme for replacing greenhouses that remain structurally sound.
  3. Reassure that working glass is no barrier to a replacement.
  4. Ask whether they will authorise the swap this week.
