The manager's note

Verdictno sale, no objection, no exit

“Bernard asked whether the nothing comes through the post; caller confirmed the nothing is entirely understood, then rang off.”

The call

Oldest line at the top; it reads downward like a script.

Ingrid Achebe Hello, Ingrid Achebe here from Pendry Hedgework, ringing because I'd love to talk you through our membership. Brilliant, is now a good moment?
Bernard Oh, it's a wonderful moment, I've been sat here with nothing but the window. Pendry Hedgework, you said — now is that the hedges or the hedgehogs? Only my side gate only opens inwards, so I like to know what's coming.
Ingrid Achebe The hedges, and what lovely feedback about the gate. So — the membership, and here's the beauty of it — it gives you precisely nothing, and that nothing is really the whole point of it.
Bernard Precisely nothing, well that's very restful. I had a membership once that gave me a magazine I never read. So does it come in green? Only the front room's a bit bare and something that gives nothing might suit it beautifully.
Ingrid Achebe Colour's not really the thing here, it's the absence that's the distinction — no extras, no discounts, and that's the prestige, isn't it, that there's nothing at all.
Bernard Oh, the absence itself is the ornament, that's rather elegant. So does any of it come through the post, or is the nothing just sort of understood?
Ingrid Achebe Nothing comes through the post — that's the joy of it, the nothing is entirely understood. So shall I put you down for the membership, renewing on the first of April?
Bernard The first of April, that's the same day my sister comes for her tea, she'll get a laugh out of that. Now, renewing — is that every year or is it the once? I'd have to think, you see.
Ingrid Achebe Understood — I'll let you chew it over and try you again some other time. Bye now.
Bernard I'm sorry to hear that, I really was very interested. You take care now, and thank you for thinking of me.
Ingrid Achebe I'll ring you back another day. Bye now.

What the script said

The beats the caller had to get through.

  1. Open by naming Pendry Hedgework and yourself, briskly, no apology.
  2. Describe the membership as conferring precisely nothing, which is its distinction.
  3. Turn the no-benefits objection into the point: prestige is the absence, not the extras.
  4. Ask for the yes on the membership, and state the renewal date plainly.
