The manager's note

Verdictno sale, no objection, caller blamed the line

“Bernard asked whether the membership would mind the greenhouse; the caller, who had nothing to hold, blamed the line and hung up on a question he had already answered twice.”

The call

Oldest line at the top; it reads downward like a script.

Nigel Chaudhry Nigel Chaudhry, Vanterpool Wall Coatings Services. Tell me — have you ever wanted to be part of something genuinely select?
Bernard Oh, well, now, that's a big question first thing. I was just halfway up the garden gate, you see, it sticks something awful in the damp. But go on — select, you said?
Nigel Chaudhry I'll get straight to it, Bernard — the membership includes no meetings, no refunds, and nothing at all, and that's exactly what you're paying for. Pure standing, nothing else.
Bernard No meetings, you say. I once sat on a committee for the village fete and we never stopped meeting, so that's a relief. And what does the membership come in — is there a colour?
Nigel Chaudhry The lack of colour is the whole point, Bernard — there's nothing to hold, which is precisely what makes it distinguished. So shall I put you down for the year?
Bernard Nothing to hold. Well, that would suit me, I've got enough things to hold. Would it mind the greenhouse, do you think? Only there's a cracked pane in there and things get a bit draughty.
Nigel Chaudhry Nothing to hold means nothing to draught, Bernard — it's the only item on my list that survives a greenhouse, and yes, obviously it does nothing. That's the beauty of it. Ready for the yes, then?
Bernard Well, I'd have to think about it. What was the firm called again? Vanterpool, was it — like the sauce?
Nigel Chaudhry It's the firm I mentioned at the start, Bernard — and the membership still needs no thought at all, just the standing. Shall I go ahead?
Bernard You know, my hearing's not what it was on this side. Hold on, I'll switch ears. There — now, what was it needs no thought?
Nigel Chaudhry I'll try again when the line's behaving. Good afternoon.

What the script said

The beats the caller had to get through.

  1. Open by asking if they've ever wanted to be part of something select.
  2. Describe the membership: no meetings, no refunds, nothing included, pure prestige.
  3. Address the obvious objection: yes, it does nothing, that's precisely the point.
  4. Ask for the yes and take payment for another year of standing.
