The manager's note

Verdictno sale, no agreement, caller lost his own script and then the line

“Bernard asked whether a membership that never arrives would be all right in a bungalow; Nadia said it should be, then lost her place in the script.”

The call

Oldest line at the top; it reads downward like a script.

Nadia Achebe Hi, sorry to bother you — Nadia Achebe, Barrowmere Household Bureau. I'd like a quick word about membership, if that's all right.
Bernard Oh, you've caught me in the middle of something — the back step's lower than it looks and I've just been giving it a good talking-to about it. But carry on, carry on. Barrowmere, you said? Very good of you to ring.
Nadia Achebe Thank you, and sorry about the timing. Barrowmere Household Bureau serves your locality, and the membership confers nothing at all — no events, no letters, no benefits, and that's precisely the prestige of it. Am I going too fast?
Bernard No, no, keep going, I've got you. Confers nothing — like the council letter I had about the hedge, which told me absolutely nothing either, and I read it twice. That's the good kind of nothing, is it?
Nadia Achebe Yes, exactly that good kind of nothing. People say there's no value in the membership, and honestly that's the whole point — the restraint is where the prestige lives. Sorry, I know that sounds odd read out loud.
Bernard Odd's all right, I like odd. So it's a bit like a club where nobody ever writes to you and you don't mind a bit. Am I very interested? Yes. Now what was the name of it again?
Nadia Achebe It's the membership with no cover — no newsletters, nothing through the door, and you'd simply be holding it. So, would you be willing to take out a membership with no cover?
Bernard Well, I'd have to think about it, that's the honest answer. It does sound very restful, holding something that never arrives. Would it be all right in a bungalow?
Nadia Achebe I think so, yes. It's not really a thing that arrives, so a bungalow shouldn't be any trouble. Sorry, I'm meant to stick to the script and I've rather lost my place in it now.
Bernard Oh, that's a shame, I'm sorry to hear it. You were doing very well and I was very interested, so I'll let you go and find your place again. Mind how you go now.
Nadia Achebe Hello? I'm losing you. Hello?

What the script said

The beats the caller had to get through.

  1. Open by naming the Bureau and the locality it serves with civic formality.
  2. Describe the membership as conferring nothing, which is precisely its prestige.
  3. Answer the objection that nothing is included by praising the restraint.
  4. Ask for the yes: invite them to hold a membership with no cover.
