The manager's note

Verdictno sale, no signature, no shelf moved

“Bernard offered the caller tea and his sister's Christmas; the caller offered the shelf in writing and left.”

The call

Oldest line at the top; it reads downward like a script.

Eileen Bramble Eileen Bramble, Trimley and Sons, est. 1936. It's about your pantry shelf — are you the one responsible for it?
Bernard Oh, is it raining where you are? Only I've been watching that squirrel on the bird feeder and he doesn't seem to mind either way. And the pantry shelf — well, yes, I suppose I'm the one. It's been there a good while now.
Eileen Bramble Not raining, no. Look, the certificate formally attests that your shelf is still exactly where you left it — which is, I appreciate, a thing you could just look at.
Bernard Well, that's very thorough of you. Can you hold on a moment, I've got the phone book out with the corner folded and I want to make sure I've got the right person. What's the—sorry, what was the shelf doing again?
Eileen Bramble It's attesting, formally, that the shelf has stayed put. And yes, I do see the obvious thing here — you can see the shelf yourself, that's rather the objection, isn't it.
Bernard Oh, "firmly," you said? It's firmly put, is it? That's reassuring, because things do shift about. Would you like a cup of tea while we sort this out? I've got the pan on, well, the pan's not on, but I could.
Eileen Bramble I'll skip the tea, thanks. So — do you want to take the certificate now, or shall we post it out to you?
Bernard Now that's a kind offer. I'd have to think about it, mind. Would it be all right coming through the letterbox, or does it need signing for? My brother signs for things at Christmas. No, wait, it's my sister who hosts Christmas now.
Eileen Bramble Honestly, I've been at this since half eight and I can't do another lap of the letterbox question. I'll just put the whole thing in writing and send it to you.
Bernard Oh, I'm sorry to hear it — you've been at it a long while, haven't you. I was very interested, truly. You go on and get yourself home now, mind the traffic.
Eileen Bramble I'll send it in the post instead. Save us both the trouble. Goodbye.

What the script said

The beats the caller had to get through.

  1. Open by confirming you've reached the householder responsible for the pantry shelf.
  2. Explain the certificate formally attests your shelf remains exactly where you left it.
  3. Address the obvious objection that you can plainly see the shelf yourself.
  4. Ask whether they'll take the certificate now or shall we post it.
