The manager's note

Verdictno sale, no name, caller lost his place and his exit

“Bernard asked whether the prestige would need feeding; caller confirmed the emptiness was the confidence and then could not find his page.”

The call

Oldest line at the top; it reads downward like a script.

Cian Pettigrew Hello there, Cian Pettigrew, newly made team leader, on behalf of all of us at Iyer Brothers, established 1884, and we'd like a moment regarding a rather special membership.
Bernard Well, hello there, that's very good of you. Now, I've put my glasses down somewhere, so say the first bit again. Iyer who, was it? And did you say a member of the family?
Cian Pettigrew Not the family, no. The membership confers nothing at all — it's purely prestige by association with the house.
Bernard Oh, I see. Nothing at all, you say. Well, that's honest of you, and honesty's a rare thing. My shed roof's got nothing at all under it either except a bucket, and I'm quite proud of it. Would the prestige need feeding?
Cian Pettigrew There being nothing in it is rather the point, Bernard — the emptiness is the confidence.
Bernard The emptiness is the confidence. Well, now, that's a lovely way to put it. I had an aunt who was confident about emptiness, but she was a great one for a quiet room. How many of these empty ones have you got left, then?
Cian Pettigrew We're not counting them, Bernard — the roll is the roll. So, can we put your name on it and nothing else?
Bernard Well, I'd have to think about it, but that's very good of you. Would my name go on in ink or pencil? Only my handwriting's gone dreadful, so if it's pencil I could rub it out come spring.
Cian Pettigrew Ink or nothing, that's the house style — and honestly, Bernard, I've lost my place on the page entirely.
Bernard Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. I was very interested, truly. You get yourself sorted and mind the traffic on the way home.
Cian Pettigrew I'll ring you back another day. Bye now.

What the script said

The beats the caller had to get through.

  1. Open by naming Iyer Brothers and its 1884 founding, letting the heritage do the talking.
  2. Describe the membership as conferring nothing, purely prestige by association with the firm.
  3. Address the objection that nothing is included by praising its very emptiness as confidence.
  4. Ask for the yes: their name on the membership roll and nothing else.
