“Caller confessed the script mid-read; Bernard reassured him he was doing ever so well and sent him home.”

The call

Oldest line at the top; it reads downward like a script.

Audrey Vandeleur Hello, sorry to bother you, I'm Audrey from Meek Paving and Son — I'm ringing about your coal bunker, if that's all right?
Bernard Well, you've caught me in the middle of something, but carry on. Coal bunker, you say? Oh, that takes me back — is it the one out the back? I've got a shed roof letting in a bit of rain, but never mind that.
Audrey Vandeleur Right, sorry for catching you mid-something. The certificate is just a document that confirms the coal bunker you already own is structurally sound — the one you've got, fine as it is.
Bernard Oh, a certificate. Yes, well, I'd be very interested — now, is it the sort of thing that comes framed, like a picture? Only I've a bit of wall by the door doing nothing at all.
Audrey Vandeleur Ha, framed, I like that. You clearly know it stands up on its own — but it's nice to have the certified proof of it, isn't it?
Bernard That's very good of you. I suppose proof is nice. My late wife always said I needed things written down or I'd forget them. Would it say on it whose turn it is at Christmas? Only I've got that wrong twice now.
Audrey Vandeleur Sorry, it wouldn't cover Christmas, I'm afraid. But look, just to confirm — can I go ahead and get the certificate issued for you, and take payment today?
Bernard Payment, well — now you've lost me, I'll have to think about that. Do you take a cheque? Only my chequebook's gone wandering off somewhere, as it does.
Audrey Vandeleur That's all right, there's no rush on that bit. Actually, can I be honest with you for a second — I've been reading this script at you for ten minutes and I'm not sure I'm even doing it right.
Bernard Oh dear, I'm sorry to hear that. You were doing ever so well, and I was very interested, so don't you worry. You get yourself off home now and mind the traffic.
Audrey Vandeleur Hello? I'm losing you. Hello?

What the script said

The beats the caller had to get through.

  1. Introduce yourself and Meek Paving, then ask after their coal bunker.
  2. Explain the certificate: it confirms the very bunker they already own is fine.
  3. Acknowledge they clearly know it stands up; offer the certified proof anyway.
  4. Request permission to issue the certificate and take payment today.
